| Qualities of a Good Social Dancer: If you talk to 10 different competition judges and ask them the question "What Qualities Make a Good Dancer" you will probably receive 10 different answers. Our Thoughts: 5 Qualities of a Good Male Dance Partner: 1) Great Attitude. When I walk off the floor I want to feel that the dance was a success. We both enjoyed the dance and we will dance again. If I miss a step or add my own interpretation to a step I want him to be okay with that. I want him to laugh if we goof up, not get upset. 2) Knows Enough Dances to Dance to a Variety of Styles of Music. As a lady dancer when I hear a piece of music that speaks to me I want to dance. I want a partner who knows how to dance to that music. When "Mustang Sally" is playing at a wedding I want to West Coast Swing. I want to waltz to "At This Moment" and bolero when a bolero is playing. 3) Knows at Least Five Steps Per Dance and He Can Flow From Step to Step. When a gentleman dancer only knows one or two steps to a dance he, understandably, doesn't usually have the confidence to ask a lady to dance. If you do drag him out on the floor then he will tend to continue to apologize for his lack of knowledge. The lady spends the whole dance trying, usually unsuccessfully, to make him feel okay about his lack of knowledge of the dance. Not fun for either person. 4) The Ability to Lead. As a lady dancer it feels wonderful to relax, dance my part and trust that his lead is clear and that I can respond to his lead. If his lead is too whimpy or late then I spend the dance second guessing myself and him. If his lead is too forceful then I fear for the life of my bones and joints. 5) The Ability to Dance on Time to the Music. 5 Qualities of a Good Female Dance Partner. 1) Great Attitude: Guys love to dance with a lady who enjoys dancing. The more we complain the more we sit. 2) Ability to Follow: When we as women relax and let them lead it is so much easier for the gentleman. If he has to fight for control it interferes with his ability to dance his part. 3) Ability to Move: Women who are light to dance with never sit out a dance. It has nothing to do with physical weight. Being a light lady dancer is the ability to move out of the man's way. 4) Dances with Expression: "When a lady takes the music and the steps and put her passion to it I love to dance with her". That statement by one of our male students echoes the comments of all our male students. 5) Ability to Stay on Time: The man is technically in charge of timing, but if the lady is dancing to the music in her head versus his lead and the music playing on the floor bad things happen. |
